Diptayan Ghosh becomes National Rapid 2024 Champion

GM Diptayan Ghosh (RSPB) scored an unbeaten 9/11 to win National Rapid Championship 2024. He finished a half point ahead of the competition. Eight players - IM Aronyak Ghosh (RSPB), GM Raja Rithvik R (TEL), IM Arghyadip Das (RSPB), IM Srihari L R (TN), FM Suyog Wagh (MAH), IM Sammed Jaykumar Shete (MAH), IM Ayush Sharma (MP) and IM Aradhya Garg (DEL) scored 8.5/11 each. They secured second to ninth place according to tie-breaks. Suyog is the sole non IM/GM finisher among top ten. Nithin Babu (KER) is the highest untitled finisher at 15th place scoring 8/11. RSPB dominates the podium

GM Diptayan Ghosh (RSPB) won four rating tournaments last year and had multitude of podium finishes all over the world in Classical and Rapid events. He already had a runner-up finish at 1st SOA GM 2024 last month. However, his last National triumph was in 2010 in Under-13 Open category, nearly 13 years ago. A National title after such a long gap is special to him. Diptayan's previous best performance at National Rapid 2015 when he finished as the runner-up.

16...Nd4 abandons both a7 and b7-pawns. 17.Bxd4 Qxd4 18.Qxa7 Bd7 19.Nxb7 Black could not recover for the rest of the game. Eventually the extra pawns on the queenside played a key role in White earning the win.

One of the most difficult things to spot in chess is, backward moves. IM Aronyak Ghosh (RSPB) found it correctly against GM Prraneeth Vuppala (TEL) 26...Qc7 attacking the e5-pawn 27.Re1 Rb8 28.Qa3 Ra8 29.Ra1 Nxe5 Black just forced his way into White giving up the e5-pawn 30.Nxe5 Qxe5 31.Qb4 Rc8 and Black won the game in the next few moves.

A total of 225 players including 9 GMs, 24 IMs, 3 WGMs and 3 WIMs took part from various parts of the country in this three-day eleven-round Swiss League Rapid Rating tournament. It was organized by Nashik District Chess Association from 4th to 6th March 2024 at Shankaracharya Nyas at Nashik, Maharashtra. The time control was 15 minutes + 10 seconds increment.
