Unique opportunity to learn and compete during World Championship Match

There are many talented chess players who have the potential to reach great heights in their careers. To achieve this, a player needs support mainly in terms of high-level coaching, opportunities to compete in top-tier tournaments, and sufficient financial backing. Unfortunately, many players are unable to achieve their fullest potential because of lack of support. Thankfully, many people are coming forward who understand this problem and want to solve it. One such initiative is being led by Singapore Chess Federation in association with FIDE. They are going to organize a training camp called the ‘High Performance Masterclass’ which will support the needs mentioned.

As we know the World Championship date is coming closer and the venue is Sentosa in Singapore. There is so much excitement not only around the match but also the side events. The Singapore Chess Federation is committed to making the entire event memorable for chess fans. While the spotlight will be on the highly anticipated match between Gukesh and Ding Liren, the federation is also planning to organize significant events for chess players in order to make a broader impact on the chess community.

About the high performance Masterclass

The ‘Masterclass’ training camp is a four-day event organized for those players who don’t always have access to high-level coaching. With the help of this camp, players will get to learn from world-class trainers. It will take place from 25th November to 28th November in Singapore.

Eligibility criteria for the masterclass

1. Applicants must be 20 years old or younger as of December 31, 2023.

2. Applicants should have at least one GM norm.

3. Applicants should be actively involved during the training camp and they should be comfortable with the English language as the sessions will be conducted in English.

Two players will be selected from those who apply via ChessBase India (Google form below).

The two players will get three major benefits:

1) High-level coaching from world-class trainers:

Those who will attend the ‘Masterclass’ will get training from GM Jacob Aagaard, GM Thomas Luther, and GM Pavel Eljanov. There is no doubt that these three will bring the best to the table and players will take the most benefit from it. But as a bonus, the federation is trying to bring 4th trainer as well. You can keep guessing who could that be!

GM Jacob Aagard is recognized as one of the foremost chess coaches in the world. He is also a highly acclaimed author who has written several award-winning books. If you have the opportunity to train under him, be prepared to delve deeply into whatever he teaches. | Photo: David Llada

When it comes to tactics, who is better than GM Thomas Luther? He is one of those who attacks his opponent right from the opening. Also, he was the captain of Singapore's Women's team for the 45th Chess Olympiad. | Photo: FIDE

The fact that GM Pavel Eljanov served as the second to the legendary Boris Gelfand for many years makes him an ideal coach for this camp. Eljanov is a distinguished player who has won two team gold medals and one individual silver medal at the Chess Olympiads and has had a career high Elo of 2750+.

2) Participate in the Singapore International Open tournament:

The players will get the opportunity to participate in the Singapore International Open tournament after the training camp. This will be a great opportunity to apply all the knowledge gained from the training camp into practice in a high-level tournament.

Tournament details:

The tournament will take place from 29th November to 5th December at Resorts World Sentosa Convention Centre, 8 Sentosa Gateway, Singapore 098269. It’s a classical tournament consisting of nine rounds with a time control of 90 minutes + 30 seconds increment from move 1. The total prize fund for this tournament is $100,000. Here is the confirmed players list.

3) Financial support:

The Singapore Chess Federation will provide twin-sharing accommodation with breakfast for the selected players. They will also provide daily meal allowances for lunch and dinner. Moreover, the players from the training camp will not be required to pay any entry fees for the tournament as that will also be covered by SCF. Participants will only be responsible for their travel expenses and any costs incurred by accompanying persons. This way, SCF aims to offer substantial financial support to the players.

This initiative is designed to make the players' trip to Singapore both rewarding and a valuable learning experience!
