Kvika Reykjavik Open R2-3: Gukesh's model win in the KID

by Shahid Ahmed - 08/04/2022

Third seeded GM Hans Niemann (USA) and GM Lukasz Jarmula (POL) emerged coleaders at the conclusion of the third round of Kvika Reykjavik Open 2022. Gukesh, Adhiban and Raunak are at 2.5/3 each. Gukesh scored a very nice win in the King's Indian Defence in the second round against IM Thibault Fantinel (FRA). Adhiban converted his extra pawn advantage into a win against popular chess streamer IM Eric Rosen (USA). Raunak won against FM Harry Grieve convincingly in Round 3. Abhijeet Gupta and Tania Sachdev suffered a loss in Round 3. They are at 2.0/3 and 1.5/3 each respectively. Round 4 starts today at 3 p.m. local time (8:30 p.m. IST). Photo: Aditya Sur Roy

Only Hans Niemann and Lukasz Jarmula at 3.0/3

Thanks to accelerated pairings and a strong lineup, only two players are at 100% score at the end of the third round.

Round 2: Gukesh - Fantinel: 1-0

GM D Gukesh (2637) scored an academic victory against IM Thibault Fantinel (FRA, 2378).

Position after 17.c5

White launch a thematic flank attack on the queenside 17.c5. Black did not even play f4-g5 at the right time for which he had to pay a heavy price.

Praggnanandhaa - Marina: 0.5-0.5

Queen endings are always complex. Add a couple of minor pieces to it, things become more complicated. GM Praggnanandhaa (2624) had a substantial advantage in the endgame against IM Marina Brunello (ITA, 2337).

Position after 38...c3

39.f4 seems to be the most logical choice as it protects the e5-pawn and also ensures the bishop cannot get back into action easily. 39.Qxg6 was played Qg1 40.Qd6 Qxc1 41.Qd4+ and White was unable to regain the material because his c2-bishop was also under attack. Pragg eventually managed to salvage a draw.
