Kaustuv Kundu sensational at 5th DD-DBCA Rating Open 2024

Top seed IM Kaustuv Kundu missed the first round as he was busy winning 6th Bangalore Rating Open 2024. He won the next eight games in-a-row scoring 8/9 and finished a half point ahead of the field. IM Shahil Dey, Arpan Das and Ritabrata Chakraborty scored 7.5/9 each. They secured second, third and fourth place according to tie-breaks. The total prize fund of the tournament was ₹400000. The top three prizes were ₹70000 + trophy, ₹50000 and ₹30000 each respectively. The six-day nine round Rating Open tournament was organized by and at Dhanuka Dhunseri Dibyendu Barua Chess Academy in Kolkata, West Bengal from 11th to 16th April 2024. Misses first round, wins eight in-a-row to conquer his second rating tournament in ten days

It is not every day we get to witness the top seed of the tournament missing the first round as he was preoccupied winning another rating tournament. Despite the miss, IM Kaustuv Kundu won his next eight consecutive games and finished a half point ahead of the field. It will be extremely difficult to tie his performance, let alone break it. Kaustuv also won the previous edition of this event last year. Kaustuv and IM Shahil Dey were the coleaders 7/8 going into the final round. IM Shahil Dey drew with IM Utsab Chatterjee. Kaustuv was in a must-win situation to become the champion as his tie-break was not good. He managed to beat Santu Mondal and become the winner.

IM Shahil Dey (2332) made the mistake of retreating his knight to e2 26.Ne2? d4! -+ 27.Qxd4 Bxh1 28.Nxc3 Bf3 29.Rf1 Rd8 30.Qe3 Bxg4 31.Ne4 Bxh5 and Black went on to win the game and join the lead with Shahil 7/8 heading into the final round.

It was organized by and at Dhanuka Dhunseri Dibyendu Barua Chess Academy in Kolkata, West Bengal from 11th to 16th April 2024. The time control of the event was 90 minutes + 30 seconds increment per move.
