Kaustuv Kundu dominates 4th DD-DBCA Rating Open 2023

by Shahid Ahmed - 10/10/2023

Top seed of the tournament, IM Kaustuv Kundu scored an unbeaten 8.5/9 to win 4th DD-DBCA Rating Open 2023. He finished a staggering 1.5 points ahead of the field. Eight players scored 7/9. Out of them, Ritabrata Chakraborty and Bivor Adak were placed second and third respectively according to tie-breaks. Kaustuv's sole draw was against the only other IM taking part in the event - Ramnathan Balasubramaniam in the penultimate eighth round. The total prize fund of the tournament was ₹350000. The top three prizes were ₹50000 and a trophy, ₹40000 and ₹30000 each. This was Kaustuv's fourth overall, third rating tournament triumph of the year. Photos: Shahid Ahmed

Kaustuv is in a different league

Kaustuv Kundu became one of the latest IM's of India, over a month ago. In his first-ever Europe trip to play norm events, he scored three IM-norms and gained 166 Elo rating points. Thus, he took the challenge of playing the tournament and did not worry much about losing his rating. He knew he had to score high to not lose a lot of Elo rating points. An 8.5/9 score cost him only 3 Elo rating points which is almost negligible. This was also Kaustuv's first rating tournament in India after he fulfilled the requirements for IM title. 11-year-old Sanjeeban Mandal scored an impressive 7/9 to secure seventh place as per tie-breaks. The boy is the youngest top ten finisher of the event.

Runner-up - Ritabrata Chakraborty 7/9

Second Runner-up - Bivor Adak 7/9

Top 3 (L to R): 2nd Ritabrata Chakraborty 7/9, 1st IM Kaustuv Kundu 8.5/9 and 3rd Bivor Adak 7/9

IM Kaustuv Kundu scored an unbeaten 8.5/9 and finished 1.5 points ahead of the field

The reason he found it was risky to play the tournament is despite a fantastic performance of 8.5/9, he is still losing 3 Elo rating points because of one draw which was his toughest game of the event.
