SuperUnited R&B 2023 Day 4: Maximus Magnus wrecks the field, scores a perfect 9/9

by Shahid Ahmed - 09/07/2023

Magnus Carlsen did something which will be very difficult for anyone to repeat including himself as he mentioned. The world no.1 won all nine of his games on the first day of Blitz at SuperUnited Rapid and Blitz 2023. The Norwegian has made many records in his career but to win all nine games of Blitz in a day, is something he had never done before. This performance propelled him to the top of the leaderboard 20/27. Previous day leaders, Fabiano Caruana and Ian Nepomniachtchi are at 17/27 each. Vishy Anand and D Gukesh had a tough day. They only managed to score three points each, moving their score to 13/27. Blitz Round 10 starts from 2 p.m. local time, 5:30 p.m. IST. Photos:Lennart Ootes/Grand Chess Tour

Caruana and Nepomniachtchi tied at second place

"This is just very very special to me. I have had good days before in terms of score. I have definitely played better but at some point I realized that I can actually make it... I have had stretches in Poland where I had 10.5/11 or something. To win every single game on one day, I have never done that before and probably won't do again." - Magnus Carlsen on scoring a perfect 9/9.

Magnus Carlsen expresses joy scoring 9/9

"I guess when I had 6/6, I was thinking that... well Alireza as a black is a very difficult matchup, you often get chances. I thought like if I win that game I have a very good chance. I was dreaming a little bit earlier but that's the point where I thought this could happen" - Carlsen on when he felt 9/9 is a realistic possibility.
