World Junior 2022 R5: Leon Luke Mendonca and Prraneeth Vuppala reduce the gap

GM Leon Luke Mendonca scored an emphatic victory over IM Armen Barseghyan (ARM) in the fifth round of World Junior 2022 Open. IM Prraneeth Vuppala defeated FM Hugo de Melo Lux (BRA) with a very nice counter-attack. Both Leon and Prraneeth are now at a half point behind the leader 3.5/5 each. They will face each other in the sixth round. WGM Priyanka Nutakki played a steady game and defeated WFM Zsofia Gombocz (HUN) to move to 4/5. She is now just a half point behind the leaders and will face one of them, WGM Govhar Beydullayeva (AZE) in the sixth round. It starts today at 3:30 p.m. local time, 7 p.m. IST. 13 players including GM Andrey Esipenko is currently leading the Open section with a score of 4/5. The Girls section is led by three - top seed IM Nurgyul Salimova (BUL), second seeded WIM Meruert Kamalidenova (KAZ) and fourth seeded WGM Govhar Beydullayeva (AZE).

GM Leon Luke Mendonca (2558) converted his attack on his opponent IM Armen Barseghyan's (ARM, 2402) king when he did not defend correctly.

Before playing 17...f5, Black needed to prepare it 17...Bc6. 18.exf6 Nxf6 19.Qh4 Kg8 20.Rfe1 g6 21.Bh6 Nh5 22.Qe4 and White won the game in the next few moves.

IM Prraneeth Vuppala's (2451) victory over FM Hugo de Melo Lux (BRA, 2309) is a good example of what happens when you rapidly launch a counter attack in a correct manner.

20.Bg3 Nxc5 21.Nxf7 Qxf7 22.f6 Bxf6 23.Bxe5 0-0-0 24.Rxf6 Qe7 would have been fine for White. Instead, 20.Qh5 0-0-0 21.Bg3 Nf6 22.Qh4 h6 23.Nf3 Ne4 Black's attack just free flowed and he went on to win the game.
