World Junior 2022 R2-3: Priyanka Nutakki makes a good start

by Shahid Ahmed - 14/10/2022

WGM Priyanka Nutakki made a good start 2.5/3 at World Junior 2022 Girls. She defeated WFM Gulenay Aydin (TUR) in the second round and drew with WGM Maili-Jade Ouellet (CAN) in the third. Although the Canadian had a winning opportunity, she missed the combination and Priyanka managed to escape with a draw. IM Prraneeth Vuppala and IM Manish Anto Cristiano F drew with GM Arseniy Nesterov and GM Iniyan P respectively in the third round. Four Indians are currently at 2/3 in the Open section. Prraneeth will face IM S Rohith Krishna in Round 4. It starts today at 3:30 p.m. local time, 7 p.m. IST. Photo: Przemysław Nikiel/European Chess TV

A tough day for the Indians

The second day was a tough day for Indians in the Open section. Six boys lost their games in the second round with the black pieces, two in the Girls. In the third round, GM Leon Luke Mendonca and IM Utsab Chatterjee are the only two to register a victory, while the remaining seven games in the Open ended in draws.

Open Round 2: Svane - Moksh: 0-1

IM Moksh Amit Doshi (2430) had one opportunity to turn things in his favor against GM Frederik Svane (GER, 2566).

Position after 26.c5

26.a4 would have been fine for White. However, 26.c5 does not work as Black can take it. 26...Qxc5 27.Nxf6+ Kh8 28.Nd7 Rfd8 and there is no danger for Black. 27.Rxf6 is not a good idea as White loses the knight after Rfd8. There is no way to save the pinned knight. Unfortunately Moksh decided against taking the pawn and played 26...Qe6. The solitary window of opportunity was shut and White went on to win the game.

Round 3: Nesterov - Prraneeth: 0.5-0.5

IM Prraneeth Vuppala (2451) had an interesting game against GM Arseniy Nesterov (2567). It ended in a draw.

Girls Round 2: Priyanka - Gulenay: 1-0

WGM Priyanka Nutakki (2326) launched a very sound attack on WFM Gulenay Aydin's (TUR, 2109) kingside.

Position after 21.g4

Black should have played 19...fxe4 to create some chances for herself. Instead, she opted for 19...Qf6 20.exf5 Bxf5 21.g4 and we reach the above position. Black is positionally lost here. 21...Bd7 22.gxh5 Rh8 23.h6+ Kf8 24.Ne4 Qf7 25.0-0-0 Well White has enough time to continue the attack, so putting the king into safety by doing a long castle is the right way. White eventually won the game comfortably.

Round 3: Maili-Jade - Priyanka: 0.5-0.5

WGM Maili-Jade Ouellet (CAN, 2177) missed a winning combination against WGM Priyanka Nutakki (2326).

Position after 30...Ng6

30...Rc1 would have kept things in balance. Yet, 30...Ng6 is a huge mistake. White could have ended things immediately. Can you find out what did White miss?
