by ChessBase India - 27/02/2022

Things are getting really tense for IM Anwesh Upadhyaya, an Indian IM and doctor, who is stuck in his apartment in Kyiv. The city is under siege from Russian army and a curfew has been imposed until Monday. It is too risky to venture out and Anwesh is stuck in his apartment. The former National Rapid champion of India was in Kyiv since nearly a decade to study medicine and now works at a local hospital as a resident doctor. He is hoping for things to improve so that he can make his way back to India.

As Russian army starts making inroads into Ukrainian capital Kyiv, there are many civilian lives that have come under danger. One of them is India's very own IM Anwesh Upadhyaya. The National Rapid Champion of India in 2017, Anwesh is living in Kyiv and works in city hospital No.8. Since the war has broken out Anwesh is stuck in his apartment. "There is curfew announced until Monday," says Anwesh. "Things are bad out here. I am tensed. I am hoping not to get in crossfire or collateral damage."

How the chess world has responded to Russia's invasion of Ukraine

Translation: History has seen many Black Thursdays. But today is blacker than the others. #нетвойне #saynotowar

Translation: Impossible to believe. In 2022, in Europe, people are dying in war, the fates of tens of millions of people are being broken. Horror. I don't see how emotions on the Internet can help. I will fix my position - you cannot defend yourself on someone else's territory. Russians and Ukrainians are brothers, not enemies. Stop the war.

Translation: Silence made today possible. #нетвойне
