Pattaya Open ends with a victory for Lalit Rohit
Going into the final round, top seeded Indian GM Lalit Babu M R with 6.5/8 had a half point lead and faced Indonesia IM Aditya Bagus Arfan who had pulled himself back into contention after two earlier losses. Despite Aditya’s best efforts. Lalit Babu navigated the draw to win the Pattaya Open with 7/9 while the young Indonesian, holder of two GM-norms had to be satisfied with second place together with IM Mohammad Nubairshah Shaikh, FM Alexander Chernyavsky and CM Nimay Agrawal, all who had also drawn their games.
The other players on 6/8 were two other Indians, CM Nimay Agrawal and IM Mohammad Nubairshah Shaikh, one of the players who had beaten Aditya and who came so very close to beating Lalit Babu, allowing a repetition of moves in time trouble.
On 5.5/8 were Mongolian WGM Enkhtuul Altan-Ulzii, Russian FM Alexander Chernyavsky, and Egyptian GM Samy Shoker who was always one of the leaders until his loss to Aditya in round seven.
While the Pattaya Open only attracted some 58 players, but there was still a total of 21 countries represented, and of particular interest, besides the 12 Indians, many who were young players that had earlier played in the Youth event, there were as many as seven from China, also three from Taiwan, again staying on from the larger group that played in the Youth.
With only two GMs, and 3 IMs, and many players having low ratings, even IM norms were impossible but the games showed a good level and many would have benefitted from the experience.
