GM Manik Mikulas (SVK) played a solid draw against the top seed, GM Abhijeet Gupta in the first round of 3rd Maharashtra GM (>2200) 2025. Vedant Nagarkatte defeated GM Raset Ziatdinov (USA). FM Priyanshu Patil, Samyak Dharewa, Aanjaneya Phatak, CM Venkata Ruthvik Mummana, WGM Priyanka Nutakki and FM Ajay Santhosh Parvathareddy got the better of IM Sammed Shete, IM Viani Antonio Dcunha, IM Semetei Tologon Tegin (KGZ), IM Mohsen Elgabry (EGY) and IM Amrou Sobh (EGY) respectively. The correct way to defend the above rook and same color bishop ending was to bring the king in action 30...Ke8. Instead, 30...Rc1+? invited trouble 31.Kh2 Be6?? the bishop got misplaced. 32.b6 Rc2 33.Rb8? Now White needed to play 33.b4. The reason is to ensure Black does not get time to take on f2. White is going to lose the b2-pawn anyway, so might as well use it displace Black's rook and keep the f2-pawn. 33...Rxf2 and Black eventually managed to get a queen vs rook and bishop endgame which ended in a draw as White had no way to break through the fortress.
