by Shahid Ahmed - 09/07/2022

IM Aronyak Ghosh made a blazing start 6/6. Then he drew the next three games. In the final round, he was up against GM Boris Savchenko. It was a must-win game for him to clinch the championship as a draw meant Hari Madhavan N B winning the event on tie-breaks. Aronyak managed to win the last round game, the tournament 8.5/10 and cross 2500 in the live ratings too. His live rating is now 2502.4. Hari Madhavan N B scored sole 8/10 to secure second place. He also earned his second IM-norm. He is now final IM-norm and 15 Elo rating points away from becoming India's next International Master. GM Tran Tuan Minh (VIE) scored 7.5/10 and was placed third according to tie-breaks.

Round 8: Himal - Savchenko: 0.5-0.5

IM Himal Gusain (2371) made an excellent save against GM Boris Savchenko (2524). Himal had two rooks and a bishop for his opponent's queen and rook. It was quite a challenging endgame for him to defend.

Position after 45...Re1

45...Re1 created an opportunity for White to fight back 46.Rxf5! Qxf5 47.Rxe1 Qg4. White does not need to be bothered about defending the h4-pawn. Find out what should he do to build an infallible fortress.

Alexei - Hari Madhavan: 0-1

IM Hari Madhavan N B (2374) persevered a tough position against GM Alexei Fedorov (2523). He waited for his opportunity to strike back.

Position after 30.d5

30.d5 created a target on e5 for Black. Hari Madhavan took it 30...Ncxe5! 31.fxe5 Qxe5. After a bit of back and forth play, Black went on to win the game.

Round 9: Hari Madhavan - Rajesh: 1-0

Hari Madhavan N B (2374) initiated a beautiful pawn break at the center of the board against IM Rajesh Vav (2358). It acted as a prelude to the scales completely shifting towards White's favor.

Position after 23.c5

23.c5 completely disintegrates Black's position. It would have taken a computer-like play for Black to defend the position. 23...dxc5 24.fxe5 Kb8 25.Qf4 Bc8 26.e6 Rh5 27.Re5 Rf8 28.Rf1 there is not much left for Black to do. White won the game in another nine moves.

Round 10: Savchenko - Aronyak: 0-1

IM Aronyak Ghosh (2494) was in a must-win situation in the final round against GM Boris Savchenko (2524). A draw would leave his fate in Hari Madhavan's hands. It was clear from Aronyak's play that he was only playing for a win.

Position after 20...Rbe8

White needed to play 21.Nd1 to prevent any kind of counterplay. 21.fxg4 gave the opening Black was looking for Rxe3 22.Qd1 hxg4 23.Qxg4 Be5 24.Na4 Bf4 Soon Black gained the c4-pawn and the position turned completely winning for him. Hari Madhavan drew his game, thus Aronyak became a clear champion.

Girinath - Aswath: 0-1

One of the most exciting games of the last round was between IM P D S Girinath (2361) and Aswath S (1807). It was a battle between a veteran and a teenager.

Position after 34...Ka7

It is not easy to evaluate this position especially when the clock is counting down. Computer evaluates it to be equal. However, after 35.e6 it says Black is winning. Black made an error 35...a4 which created an opportunity for White to win via 36.Nd6. Unfortunately he opted for 36.e7 which was still enough, only the road towards the victory became a bit tougher. Anyway after mutual errors, it was Aswath who won the game.
