The highest rated untitled player of the event, is now one of the six leaders. GM Stupak Kirill, GM Nguyen Duc Hoa, GM Karthikeyan P, IM Aronyak Ghosh and IM Nitin S are the remaining five players at 4/4. 13-year-old, 132nd seeded Shreyas Seshadri Nellore made an impressive start 3.5/4. Rohit S and Barath Kalyan are two remaining untitled at 3.5/4 each. Round 5 starts today at 10 a.m. IST.

Round 1: Om Nagnath - Mitrabha: 1-0
GM Mitrabha Guha (2499) blundered in the pawn ending against 17-year-old Om Nagnath Lamkane (1727).
47...Ke5 followed by Kd6 would have been an easy draw. However, Black miscalculated and played 47...Kf4 48.d6 +- e3+ 49.Kf1 and now Black can force a pawn promotion Kg3 50.d7 e2+ 51.Ke1 Kg2 52.d8Q f2+ 53.Kxe2 f1Q+ 54.Kd2 and White wins the resultant queen endgame. Black tilted further 49...f2 50.Kg2 and Black resigned.
Round 2: Van Huy - Jeet Shah: 0-1
GM Nguyen Van Huy (VIE, 2383) did not react correctly to his opponent, 15-year-old Jeet Shah's (1855) onslaught on the kingside.
If White had taken at f4, a couple moves earlier, things would have been completely different. For e.g. 19.gxf4 exf4 20.e5 Rh6 21.e6 Qh4 22.h3 gives White a decisive advantage. Now 21.gxf4 gives Black the decisive advantage Qh4 22.Qe3 Bf1 and it is over for White.
Round 3 Jomon - Laxman: 0.5-0.5
GM Laxman R R (2403) exchanged his queen for his opponent Jinan Jomon's (2043) rooks. He was winning for the better part of the game. However, he missed an opportunity and his opponent eventually managed to escape with a draw.
Find out the winning plan for Black here. It is certainly not easy to figure out. The game continued 31...Rc1+ 32.Kf2 Ra1. Black regained his decisive advantage, yet none as definite as the above position.
Round 4: Hari Madhavan - Savchenko: 1-0
Hari Madhavan N B (2374) scored a fantastic win against GM Boris Savchenko (2524).
White made a sensible break in the center 23.d5. Computer suggests an alternate break 23.h4 which is supposedly better. There is absolutely nothing wrong with 23.d5. Black had to take it 23...exd5 24.Nxf6+ gxf6 25.Rxe8 Rxe8 26.Qxe8 Nd3 27.Qxf7+ Kxf7 and now 28.cxd5 was simpler than 28.Rb1 which allowed Black to get back in the game eventually.
White displayed staunch defence and waited with bated breath for the right moment. 52.h4 was the beginning of regaining substantial advantage. Hari played precisely and gave his opponent zero chance any more to win the game after 72 moves.
Nitin - Sai Vishwesh: 1-0
IM Nitin S (2404) has been in terrific form this entire year. His latest victim on the board was Sai Vishwesh C (2257).
There is no doubt that White is completely winning in the above position. Find out the winning continuation after 23...Kg8. White opted for the quiet 24.cxd3 and went on to win the game in another 13 moves.
Avinash - Jeet: 0.5-0.5
Jeet Shah (1855) is having a fantastic tournament. He pushed IM Avinash Ramesh (2349) to his limit.
Despite having two queens on the board, Black is unable to win the game. The reason is, the queens cannot actively participate in the defense of the king. Thus, White escapes with a draw via perpetual check. If Black decides to get adventurous, White has a bishop which will have something to say.
A total of 199 players including 13 GMs, 13 IMs, 2 WGMs and 3 WIMs are taking part from 12 countries across the world including India. The tournament is organized by Ananthi Chess Academy from 28th June to 5th July 2022 at Hotel Thangam Grand, Madurai, Tamil Nadu. The ten-round Swiss league tournament has a time control of 90 minutes + 30 seconds increment from move no.1.
