The scenic mountain town of Forni di Sopra in Italy is once again ready to welcome chess players from around the world as the 17th Dolomiti International Chess Tournament takes place from June 6 to June 13, 2026. Nestled in the heart of the Dolomites — a UNESCO World Heritage Site — this event continues to combine high-level chess with breathtaking natural beauty. Located in the upper valley of the Tagliamento River and surrounded by the protected landscapes of the Dolomiti Friulane Natural Park, Forni di Sopra offers a unique and peaceful atmosphere, making it one of the most picturesque venues in international chess. 17th Dolomiti International Chess Tournament Returns to Forni di Sopra (June 6–13, 2026)

The playing venue at the local Sports Center ensures excellent conditions, with spacious arrangements and live broadcast of games, allowing fans worldwide to follow the action.

Forni di Sopra – Where Chess Meets Serenity

Forni di Sopra is not just a tournament venue — it is an experience. Situated at an altitude of around 907 meters, the town offers fresh mountain air, lush greenery, and stunning alpine views.

During June, the weather remains ideal for chess, with temperatures ranging between 15°C and 25°C, creating perfect conditions for concentration and performance.

The surrounding forests, waterfalls, and valleys provide players with an opportunity to relax and rejuvenate between rounds. Whether it is a quiet walk, light training, or simply enjoying nature, the environment enhances both mental clarity and competitive spirit.

The tournament will be played over 9 rounds, bringing together players from multiple countries. As in previous editions, the event is divided into two categories:

  • Group A – for higher-rated players

  • Group B – for developing and intermediate players

Forni di Sopra is a beautiful mountain town in northeastern Italy, and while it is slightly remote, it is well connected through major Italian cities.

By Air
The nearest airports are:

  • Venice Marco Polo Airport (around 130 km) – the most convenient international option

  • Treviso Airport (around 140 km)

  • Trieste Airport (around 120 km)

From these airports, you can travel further by train or car.

By Train
The closest major railway station is Udine, which is well connected to cities like Venice, Milan, and Rome. From Udine, Forni di Sopra is about 80 km away.

By Road
From Udine, you can reach Forni di Sopra by:

  • Bus services (regular regional connections available)

  • Taxi or rental car (approximately 1.5 to 2 hours drive)

Forni di Sopra is a beautiful mountain town located in the northeastern part of Italy, in the province of Udine, within the Friuli Venezia Giulia region. Forni di Sopra is situated at an altitude of approximately 907 meters above sea level. It lies in the Dolomites mountain range, which is recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
