FIDE World Cup 2023 R2.1: Pragg sizzles, Karthik defies Nakamura, Gukesh now World no.10

The tenth FIDE World Cup and second edition of FIDE Women's World Cup is a record-breaking event for India. A total of 15 players played in Round 2.1 which is the highest ever. D Gukesh defeated GM Misratdin Iskandarov (AZE) to become World no.10. He needs to win the second game to become India no.1. The reigning National champion, GM Karthik Venkataraman held the current World Fischer Random champion, GM Hikaru Nakamura (USA) to a draw. GM Koneru Humpy defeated compatriot WGM Priyanka Nutakki. Among Indians, the other victors were, GM Nihal Sarin, GM R Praggnanandhaa, GM Harika Dronavalli and IM R Vaishali. GM Abhimanyu Puranik and GM Adhiban B lost their respective games against GM Peter Svidler and GM Daniil Dubov. They must win the next game to force tie-breaks. Kartavya Anadkat wins SLAN First International Open FIDE Rated Chess Tournament 2023

After a perfect 9/9 at the 5th Ayodhana Rating Open 2023, untitled Kartavya Anadkat started as the sixth seed at the 1st SLAN International Tournament in Hyderabad. He continued his epic run to finish the tournament with a massive score of 8.5/9, ahead of four IMs. 6th Top seed of the Tournament Mr. Kartavya Anadkat from Gujarat is the Champion of the Slan First International Open FIDE Rated Chess Tournament 2023. IM Anuj Shrivatri was the first runner-up, while IM Ramanathan Balasubramanian was the second runner-up of the tournament. Kartik, Ayush and Kartavya are the winners of 16th G H Raisoni Memorial Chess Festival 2023

15-year-old Kartik Kumar Singh scored an unbeaten 10/11 to win 16th G H Raisoni Memorial Rating Open 2023. He finished a full point ahead of the field. Indrajeet Mahindrakar scored sole 9/11 to secure second position. Daksh Goyal edged past five more players on tie-breaks to finish third with a 8.5/11 score. FM Ayush Sharma scored a perfect 9/9 to win the Rapid Rating event. He also finished a full point ahead of the field. CM Vaibhav Jayant Raut and IM Vikramaditya Kulkarni scored 8/9 each to finish at second and third place. Kartavya Anadkat won the Blitz Rating event scoring 8/9. Daksh and Ayush were adjudged second and third respectively according to tie-breaks. The total prize fund combining all three tournaments was ₹451000, an increase of ₹51000 from the previous edition. FIDE World Cup 2023 R1 TB: Adhiban and Priyanka Nutakki advance to Round 2

GM Adhiban B and WGM Priyanka Nutakki won their respective tie-breaks to advance to the second round of FIDE World Cup and Women's World Cup 2023 respectively. While Adhiban was the favorite to win the match, Priyanka had to defeat a stronger opposition on paper. Adhiban won both of his Rapid tie-breaks to storm into the next round. He will face the former World Rapid champion, Daniil Dubov. It will be an intense battle as both of them are fierce attacking players. Priyanka drew her first tie-break game after an incredible save in her second Classical game. She won the second Rapid tie-break game with ease to secure her place in the second round. She will face GM Koneru Humpy. According to Priyanka, she has never even played in the same tournament as Humpy, let alone face her. This Women's World Cup is certainly a great opportunity for her. GM S L Narayanan and GM Abhimanyu Puranik scored 2-0 against their opponents to advance to Round 2 of FIDE World Cup 2023. Narayanan will face GM Yuriy Kuzubov (UKR) and Abhimanyu will be up against Peter Svidler. GM Karthik Venkataraman and WGM Mary Ann Gomes also advanced. They will face GM Hikaru Nakamura (USA) and GM Kateryna Lagno respectively. GM Harsha Bharathakoti, GM B Adhiban and WGM Priyanka Nutakki will have to play tie-breaks. Harsha suffered a loss. Himal Gusain wins 14th Vaujany Open 2023

IM Himal Gusain and GM FT Hicham Hamdouchi scored 7.5/9 at the main category (>1800) of 14th Vaujany Open 2023 International Chess Festival. Himal won the tournament on tie-breaks,Hicham was placed second. Despite losing the sixth round game to Hicham, Himal bounced back by winning the last three games to win the tournament and become champion. GM Neelotpal Das and IM Anwesh Upadhyaya are the only two other Indians to make a top ten finish. Their penultimate round encounter ended in a draw. They scored 6.5/9 and 6/9 each respectively to secure fourth and seventh place respectively. The total prize fund of the event was €5400. The first prize was €1200 + trophy. FIDE World Cup 2023 R1.1: A great start for India

Indian contingent have made a great start at FIDE World Cup and Women's World Cup 2023. Nine out of 17 Indians are playing in the first round. All of them remained undefeated. GM Harsha Bharathakoti, GM S L Narayanan, GM Abhimanyu Puranik, WGM Mary Ann Gomes and IM Divya Deshmukh have won their respective first game. They all need a draw each in the second game to advance to the second round. GM Adhiban B, GM Karthik Venkataraman, WGM Nandhidhaa P V and WGM Priyanka Nutakki drew their respective games. GM Vishnu Prasanna V scored 8/9 to win 50th year of Sivakasi Chess Club, NPSS Rathina Nadar Dr. N Mahalingam Rating Open 2023. Vishnu finished a half point ahead of the field. Thus, no tie-breaks were required. Despite losing the second round game, Vishnu bounced back by winning the next seven games in a row. Four players - IM Nitin S, IM Ratnakaran K, Selvamurugan B and Surendran N scored 7.5/9 each. They were placed second to fifth respectively. The total prize fund of the tournament was ₹1000000. The top three prizes were ₹120000, ₹80000 and ₹65000 along with a trophy each. This is only fourth tournament Vishnu played this year. FIDE World Cup 2023: Opening Ceremony and Press Conference

The Opening Ceremony of FIDE World Cup and FIDE Women's World Cup 2023 was short and sweet. The entire performance, speech, draw of lots in total lasted barely an hour. It was really well done, considering most of the players in attendance have their Game 1 in a few hours and they need to prepare based on the 'Draw of Lots' colors. Vishy Anand, FIDE Deputy President and WGM Aynur Sofiyeva, Deputy Chair for the State Committee of Family, Women and Children Affairs, drew the colors for Open and Women sections. Lalit Babu dominates Czech Open G1 Rapid 2023, Iniyan third

GM Lalit Babu scored 8/9 to win Czech Open G1 Rapid 2023. He finished a full point ahead of the field. GM Lev Yankelevich (GER) and GM Iniyan P scored 7/9 each. They secured second and third place respectively. Both Lalit and Yankelevich remained undefeated. Their penultimate round battle against each other ended in a draw. The total prize fund of the event was 60000 CZK. The top three prizes were 10000 + trophy, 6000 and 5000 CZK each respectively. This is Lalit's first tournament triumph of the year. Nikita Khoroshev wins Issykkul Open 2023, Aradhya Garg second

IM Nikita Khoroshev (UZB), FM Aradhya Garg and GM Masoud Mosadeghpour (IRI) scored 7/10 each at Isyykkul Open A 2023. Nikita became champion due to better tie-break score, Aradhya secured second place and Masoud third. Aradhya also earned his fifth IM-norm in the process. His live rating is 2395.4 now. He is 4.6 Elo rating points away from becoming India's next IM. The reigning two-time National Under-17 Open champion, CM Mayank Chakraborty scored 6/10 to be placed ninth. He also earned an IM-norm. This is his second IM-norm in consecutive months. He is now final IM-norm and few Elo rating points The total prize fund of the tournament was 1589000 soms (US$ 18000). FIDE World Cup and Women's World Cup 2023 inauguration ceremony is just a few hours away from now. We decided to do a short tour of Baku before this important event commences. The author of this article, Shahid Ahmed travelled to Icherisheher as he loves visiting historical places. After reading a lot about must-see places in Baku and getting info from the locals, Icherisheher seemed to be the perfect place to venture. In a little over three hours, he visited The Palace of Shirvanshahs, Guiness World Records award-winning Miniature Book Museum, Maiden Tower and Nizami Street.
