Jwalin Mehta clinches Akshayakalpa Organic 3rd Hyderabad Chess Centre Rapid Open with a perfect 6/6

Jwalin Mehta scored a perfect 6/6 to win Akshayakalpa Organic 3rd Hyderabad Chess Centre Rapid Open 2023. He finished a half point ahead of the competition. Four players - Childvilash Sai Surapaneni, Dhruva Thota, FM Ramu K and Nidhish Shyamal scored an unbeaten 5.5/6 each. They secured second to fifth place respectively. The total prize fund of the tournament was ₹60000. The top three prizes were ₹8000, ₹6000 and ₹4000 along with a trophy each. Jwalin, Md. Imran and Hriday Bhuta were at 5/5 each heading into the final round. Jwalin defeated the top seed Imran to become a clear champion. Grand Swiss 2023 R6: Vidit Gujrathi joins the eight-way lead

GM Arjun Erigaisi drew against the China no.3 GM Yangyi Yu in the sixth round of FIDE Grand Swiss 2023. GM Vidit Gujrathi defeated GM Hans Niemann (USA) to join the eight player group of leaders along with Arjun. Vidit's Ba7, Bb8 maneuver in the middle game surprised the most successful chess coach of all time, GM Peter Heine Nielsen (DEN). He also quipped on twitter that maybe it was the first time, he was seeing such a maneuver to attack the c7-e5 pawn chain. GM Aravindh Chithambaram drew against GM Nodirbek Abdusattorov (UZB). The All-Kerala battle between GM Nihal Sarin and GM S L Narayanan ended in a draw. IM Vaishali R continues her unbeaten fantastic run to hold GM Aleksandra Goryachkina to a draw. Speaking of fantastic, GM Anna Muzychuk (UKR) defeated the sole leader - IM Bibisara Assaubayeva (KAZ) to gain sole lead for herself 5/6. She is also the only player at 5/6 currently. Ethan Vaz wins Monginis Rapid Rating Open 2023

FM Ethan Vaz and IM Sammed Shete scored 8/9 each at Monginis Rapid Rating Open 2023. Ethan won the tournament due to better tie-breaks, Sammed was placed second. IM Vikramaditya Kulkarni and IM Bhakti Kulkarni scored 7.5/9 each. They secured third and fourth place respectively. Ethan defeated both of them. Only Sammed remained undefeated among the top ten finishers. The total prize fund of the tournament was ₹200000. The top three prizes were ₹35000, ₹25000 and ₹15000 along with a trophy each respectively. This is Ethan's first-ever Open Rating tournament triumph. Ethan was supposed to play World Cadets Under-12 Open 2023 in Egypt. However, he had to change his plans as the Indian contingent pulled out of the event, due to security concerns over the ongoing Israel-Palestine conflict.

Asylbek Abdyzhapar triumphs at 2nd Tamil Nadu IM-norm Closed Circuit 2023, Srija Seshadri third

IM Asylbek Abdyzhapar scored 7/9 to win 2nd Tamil Nadu IM-norm Closed Circuit Chess Tournament 2023. He finished a half point ahead of the field. Despite making only 0.5/2 in the first two games, Asylbek made a strong comeback by scoring 6.5/7 in the last seven games. IM David Gochelashvili scored sole 6.5/9 to secure second place. WGM Srija Seshadri made sole 6/9 to be placed third. The winner of the first edition - FM Harshad S scored 5.5/9 to secure fourth place. IM Vaishali R continues her great form at FIDE Grand Swiss Women 2023. She drew against GM Anna Muzychuk (UKR) in the fifth round. She is also having a great event so far. IM Bibisara Assaubayeva (KAZ) defeated GM Zhongyi Tan (CHN) to gain sole lead 4.5/5. In the Open section, GM Arjun Erigaisi scored a victory against the Kazakhstan no.1, GM Rinat Jumabayev. Arjun joins GM Hikaru Nakamura (USA) and GM Andrey Esipenko in a three-way lead 4/5. GM Vidit Gujrathi shared the point with GM Evgeniy Najer. India wins eight medals at 4th Asian Para Games 2022

India has won a total of eight medals in chess at 4th Asian Para Games 2022 in Hangzhou, China. Darpan Inani won individual Gold in Men's Rapid B1 scoring an unbeaten 6/7. Soundarya Kumar Pradhan won Silver 5.5/7 and Ashvin K Makwana Bronze 5/7. The three of them also won team Gold in the same category scoring 16.5/21. Kishan Gangolli won an individual Bronze medal in Men's Rapid B2B3 category scoring 5/7. He also won a team Bronze in the same category with Aryan B Joshi 3.5/7 and Somender B L 3.5/7. Himanshi Rathi secured an individual Bronze in Women Classical B1 category with a score 5/7. She is also part of the Bronze medal winning team in Women Rapid B1 with Vruthi Jain 3/7 and Sanskruti Vikas More 3/7. Grand Swiss 2023 R4: Vaishali crushes Mariya in 23 moves

IM Vaishali R is in a fantastic form. She defeated the former Women's World Champion, GM Mariya Muzychuk (UKR) in just 23 moves in the fourth round of FIDE Grand Swiss 2023 Women. Mariya's ambitious play backfired badly as it was her opponent who got an opportunity to launch a devastating attack on the kingside. GM Arjun Erigaisi and GM Aravindh Chithambaram, both playing with black pieces, missed great winning opportunities against GM Alexandr Predke (SRB) and GM Nikita Vitiugov (ENG). Praveen Kumar C wins 1st Hindustan Chess Rapid Rating Open 2023

IM Praveen Kumar C, R Shadhursshaan, Shankar A and Ram S Krishnan scored 8/9 each at 1st Hindustan Chess Rapid Rating Open 2023. Praveen won the tournament due to better tie-breaks, the remaining three were placed second to fourth respectively. Only Praveen remained undefeated. He defeated the eventual runner-up, Shadhursshaan in the fifth round. Ram's victory over the sole leader Selvamurugan B in the final round, allowed Praveen to catch up. The total prize fund of the tournament was ₹200000. GM Arjun Erigaisi drew against GM Alexey Sarana (SRB) in the third round of FIDE Grand Swiss 2023. He moves to 2.5/3. Nine other players are also at same score including the top seed GM Fabiano Caruana (USA). GM S L Narayanan and GM Aravindh Chithambaram drew against the new England no.1 GM Nikita Vitugov and GM M Amin Tabatabaei (IRI) respectively. GM Raunak Sadhwani continues his great form as he shared the point with GM R Praggnanandhaa. GM Vidit Gujrathi scored his second win in-a-row, this time against GM Dmitrij Kollars (GER). IM Vaishali R played some fiery chess to beat IM Leya Garifullina. GM Zhongyi Tan (CHN) and GM Anna Muzychuk (UKR) are the only two coleaders with a perfect score 3/3. He got the better of Spain no.3 GM David Anton Guijarro (ESP). The 20-year-old is now World no.27 in live ratings and one of the seven players at 2/2. He will face GM Alexey Sarana (SRB) in Round 3. GM S L Narayanan continues his good form as he had a hard-fought draw against the 44th Chess Olympiad Gold medalist, GM Nodirbek Abdusattorov (UZB). GM Aravindh Chithambaram drew against GM Samuel Sevian (USA). GM Raunak Sadhwani continues his great form as he drew against the World no.4 GM Hikaru Nakamura (USA). Arvinder won the tournament due to better tie-breaks. Kartik was placed second and Swapnil third. 120th seeded Prithvi won the first prize in rating category 1300-1599. Arvinder drew against Kartik in the final round. Swapnil and Prithvi won against Santhosh Kumar Sinha and Sham R respectively in the final round. The total prize fund of the tournament was ₹1501000. GM Aryan Chopra also drew his game against GM R Praggnanandhaa in the first round of FIDE Grand Swiss 2023. GM Leon Luke Mendonca held Netherlands no.2 GM Jorden van Foreest to a draw. 20 Indians will be seen in action at FIDE Grand Swiss and Women's Grand Swiss 2023, starting in Douglas, Isle of Man today. Gukesh, Praggnanandhaa, Harikrishna, Vidit, Arjun Erigaisi, Nihal, S L Narayanan, Aravindh, Raunak, Aryan Chopra, Leon, Karthikeyan and Abhijeet will play in the Open section. Harika, Vaishali, Vantika, Divya, Tania and Savitha will battle in the Women's event. 106 GMs and 7 IMs from 36 countries with an average rating 2636 are taking part in the Open. The Women's event witnesses 16 GMs, 23 IMs, 5 WGMs and 5 WIMs from 29 countries across the world with an average rating of 2402 should give you an idea about the strength of the event.
