Gawain Jones (ENG) emerged sole leader 3.5/5 at XTX Markets London Chess Classic 2024 Elite. Vidit Gujrathi and Shakhriyar Mamedyarov (AZE) are in pursuit at 3/5 each. Vidit drew with Jones in Round 3. Then he missed winning chances in the next two games against Michael Adams (ENG) and Shreyas Royal (ENG). In the Masters section, GM Raunak Sadhwani is currently sharing the lead with GM Vignir Vatnar Stefansson (ISL) and IM Marcus R Harvey (ENG) 5/6. Today is a rest day. Vidit Gujrathi (2739) drew with Gawain Jones (ENG, 2639) in Round 3. He faced the English legend, Michael Adams (2662) in Round 4. He got a good opportunity to push for a win as he gained an exchange.

Position after 22.Nc7

22...Bxa4 23.Qe2 Nc4 24.Qd3 Bxd4 25.cxd4 Bc6 26.Nxe8 and ideally White should have went on to win the game. It was not easy, the game eventually ended in a draw.

21.c4? created an opportunity for Black c5 22.h5 h6 23.Rf1 e5 24.Rd1 Be6 25.Rxd8+ Rxd8 26.Nxf5 Qg5 27.Ng3 Bg4 28.Ne4 Qf5 29.f3 Bxf3 30.Qe2 Qxe4 31.Rxf3 Qb1+ 32.Kf2 Qc1? instead Rd1 would have maintained the upper hand. The game eventually ended in a draw via perpetual check.
