Velammal MHS Mogappair & Velammal V A are the 1st National Schools Team U-12 & U-18 Champions
Velammal MHS Mogappair scored a perfect 18/18 to become the inaugural National Schools Team Under-12 Champions. They finished three match points ahead of the field. DPS East scored sole 15/18 to secure second place. PPSNC Pune, DPS Gurgaon and AVM Invincible Army scored 13/18. PPSNC Pune was adjudged third according to tie-breaks. The Under-18 category was won by Velammal Vidyalaya Alapakkam. They also scored a perfect 18/18 to become the winner of the first edition. Velammal MHS Mogappair secured second place scoring a sole 16/18. Silicon City Team A was placed third scoring 14/18. No tie-breaks were needed to determine the top three in Under-18 category. Velammal schools dominate both categories
Velammal MHS Mogappair defeated DAV School Mogappair 3-1 in the final round to win the Under-12 category. They defeated the remaining podium finishers DPS East and PPNSC Pune by a minimum margin of 2.5-1.5 in Round 6 and 8 respectively. In Under-18 category, Velammal Vidyalaya Alapakkam defeated Aditya Vidyashram Residential School 3-1 to become the champion. They won against the runner-ups, Velammal MHS Mogappair and Silicon City Team A with a score of 3.5-0.5 and 2.5-1.5 in Round 5 and 6 respectively.
Shanmathi Sree S scored a perfect 8/8 for her team. Aarav A and Tanish Ragavan S scored an important 8/9 and 7/8 each respectively.
FM Harsh Suresh scored a perfect 7/7 on board no.4. On the top board, Rohit S delivered a top notch performance scoring 8.5/9.
K Lakshminarayanan, PWD Minister, Govt. of Puducherry, inaugurated the championships in presence of Annibel Kennedy, MLA, Uppalam Constituency, S A Lourdusamy, founder of Amalorpavam Higher Secondary School, G Sankar, President of Pondicherry State Chess Association, IA Dharmendra Kumar, Chief Arbiter, R Rajendiran, Secretary, Pondicherry State Chess Association, IA V Ravichnadran and IA Narendra Shrimali, both Deputy Chief Arbiters and others. The inaugural program was conducted by the Principal of the school, Mr. Antonius Britto.
V Vaithilingam, Member of Parliament, Lok Sabha was the Chief guest of the function. He gave away the prizes to all the winners. S A Lourdusamy, founder of Amalorpavam Higher Secondary School, G Sankar, President of Pondicherry State Chess Association, IA Dharmendra Kumar, Chief Arbiter, Mr. Antonius Britto, Principal of Amalorpavam Higher Secondary School, R Rajendiran, Secretary, Pondicherry State Chess Association, IA V Ravichandran and IA Narendra Shrimali, both Deputy Chief Arbiters and others.
A total of 257 players represented 59 teams in Under-12 and 248 players represented 56 teams in Under-18 category from various schools across the country in this three-day nine-round Swiss League Rating team tournament. The tournaments were organized by Pondicherry Chess Association at Amalorpavam Higher School in Vanaraper, Pondicherry from 23rd to 25th June 2023. The time control of the event was 45 minutes + 10 seconds increment from move no.1.
