Soham Bhattacharyya wins 1st Checkmate Chess Academy, Barasat Rapid Rating Open 2024

by Shahid Ahmed - 10/09/2024

Soham Bhattacharyya and IM Subhayan Kundu scored an unbeaten 8/9 each at 1st Checkmate Chess Academy, Barasat Rapid Rating Open 2024. Soham won the tournament on tie-breaks, Subhayan was placed second. Nine players scored 7.5/9 each. Out of them, top seed of the tournament IM Arghyadip Das finished third. Srijit needed to draw in the final round to become champion. However, he lost to Subhayan and finished fourth. The total prize fund of the tournament was ₹500000. The top three prizes were ₹40000 + trophy, ₹30000 + trophy and ₹20000 each respectively. This was the first-time ever a one-day rapid rating tournament was held in Kolkata. This is Soham's second rating tournament triumph of the year. Photos: Shahid Ahmed

Over 400 players take part

IM Srijit Paul was the sole leader 7.5/8 heading into the final round. He just needed to draw to become the champion. However, it was not clear if a draw would be enough as his tie-break score was low. Thus, he refused IM Subhayan Kundu's draw offers, got himself a winning position and eventually blundered in time trouble which cost him the game and a podium finish. Soham Bhattacharyya defeated Chiranjit Manna to win the tournament. Subhaayan secured second place. IM Arghyadip Das scored a full point over Alekhya Mukhopadhyay to finish third. Soham went on to win another rating tournament in the next few days. That will be published in a separate report.
