Evgenios Ioannidis wins Serbia Open 2022 Masters, Aryan Chopra second

GM Aryan Chopra pushed for maximum to win his final round game. He scored sole 7.5/9 to secure second place. IM Evgenios Ioannidis (GRE) continued his great form by winning the last round and won the Serbia Open 2022 Masters with a score 8/9. 19 players scored 6.5/9. Out of them, GM B Adhiban, IM Aditya Mittal and GM Harsha Bharathakoti finished in top ten at sixth, seventh and ninth place according to tie-breaks. Aditya Mittal and Sakshi Chitlange move closer towards GM and WGM title

The total prize fund of the tournament was €35000, €29000 in Masters and €6000 in Amateur. Top three prizes were €7500, €5000 and €3000. IM Aditya Mittal is 5 and WIM Sakshi Chitlange is 2 Elo rating points away from becoming India's next GM and WGM. Both of them hail from the same state Maharashtra. Their next event is Paracin Open 2022 which starts tomorrow 8th July.

Emre - Aryan: 0-1

GM Aryan Chopra (2609) sacrificed an exchange to gain a huge pawn mass at the center of the board. Later Aryan could have repeated moves and taken a draw but decided to play on.

Position after 38.Rxh7

Black's pawn mass on e and f-file started gaining momentum. White captured a wrong pawn 38.Rxh7 and had to pay a heavy price for it. 38...e3! -+ 39.fxe3 Bf5 it goes without saying that Black is completely winning here. Rest was just a matter of time and technique which Aryan had no trouble converting into a win.

IM Aditya Mittal scored his final GM-norm and his live rating is now 2495. He is now 5 Elo rating points away from becoming India's 75th and Mumbai's second GM in history.

Just like Aditya, we all hope that he requires to change his twitter handle from mittal_im to mittal_gm soon.

WIM Sakshi Chitlange already has all three WGM-norms. She gained a massive 82 Elo rating points, taking her live rating to her career high, 2298. She is now just 2 Elo rating points away from becoming India's 24th WGM.

IM Padmini Rout has got into her good form just before the Olympiad. She scored 5/9 and gained 17.3 Elo rating points, taking her live rating to 2391.3. The last two round losses cost her a GM-norm and more rating points. Nevertheless, it was a good performance at the right time. She shared on her fb, "I did a chess marathon (though it's nothing like the likes of Gukesh :)), 31 classical games in 43 days which included a double round event! , +43 elo and lots of travel! It doesn't end, now time for Chennaiii! Olympiad!!"

A total of 263 players including 38 GMs, 68 IMs, 6 WGMs and 13 WIMs took part from 38 countries across the world including India. The tournament was organized by Serbia Chess Federation from 28th June to 7th July 2022 at Novi Sad, Serbia. The nine-round Swiss league tournament had a time control of 90 minutes/40 moves + 15 minutes for whole game, 30 seconds increment from move no.1.
