by Nongsha Angom - 28/05/2018

Anyone who has even a remote desire to study abroad should not miss this opportunity. We all know that studying abroad gives international exposure, increases cultural intelligence and one becomes self confident with broad outlook but one of the main reasons which stops one to dream about it is the fund required to cover the studies. Kazakh-British Technical University or KBTU which is the number one university of Kazakhstan is organizing a chess tournament which is open for high-school students and they are offering a full scholarship for any specialty in KBTU for the winner.

From the 4th to the 10th of July 2018, Kazakh British Technical University will hold a tournament for high schoolers in Almaty, Kazakhstan. The winner of this tournament gets a scholarship to study for absolutely no cost at the KBTU in any specialty of his/her choice.

Kazakh-British Technical University or KBTU is a research and educational institution located in Almaty, Kazakhstan. Founded in 2001, KBTU is the first and only Kazakhstani University with internationally accredited IT programs by the most authoritative U.S. agency Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology (ABET). It is also the first and only Kazakhstani University to receive an international accreditation for its Oil and Gas programs in the UK by the Institution of Marine Engineering, Science and Technology (IMarEST), UK. LSE (London School of Economics) has its branch at KBTU, so graduates get diploma of LSE.

It might be interesting for Indian players to discover that there is a sizable Indian colony in Almaty, mainly businessmen and students (according to official data, at the moment around 1000 students) and the weather in Almaty in July is warm. The day temperature is well above 30°C and rains are rare.

There are also some Indian restaurants with talking names such as ‘Spice Mantra’, ‘Tandoor’, ‘Bollywood’ etc.

The Tournament is taking place from 4-10 July and is open only for the High School students. Those who are interested should apply in advance given that getting Kazakh visa will take some time. As soon as the organizing committee confirms application, the participant will get a supporting letter for Kazakh visa. The deadline of applications for those who need Kazakh visa is 1 June. If players who do not need visa, the deadline is 2 July.

GM Evgeny Vladmirov (left), who is one of the finest trainers in the world, is closely associated with the University! Nothing like getting a free scholarship and also getting a chance to interact with a world class trainer on a regular basis.

Note: Anyone who wins the tournament and gets a grant should know that it will be virtually impossible to continue one’s chess career during his/her university period, since education will consume one's full energy and time. And grant is not transferable, it can't be en-cashed.
