Tata Steel 2025 R3: Praggnanandhaa wins two in-a-row, Gukesh draws with Caruana

by Shahid Ahmed - 21/01/2025

R Praggnanandhaa won his second consecutive in the third round of 87th Tata Steel Masters 2025. This time he outplayed his 45th Olympiad Gold medal winning teammate, Arjun Erigaisi. Praggnanandhaa was surprised that his opponent went for a line which traded queens early. However, in the endgame Arjun made a few inaccuracies which cost him the game. This win brought Praggnanandhaa back to World no.10 in the live ratings. D Gukesh drew with the World no.2, Fabiano Caruana (USA). Leon Luke Mendonca made his first point of the event as he had a well contested draw against Pentala Harikrishna. Round 4 starts today at 2 p.m. local time, 6:30 p.m. IST for both Masters and Challengers section. Photo: Jurriaan Hoefsmit/Tata Steel Chess Tournament 2025

Challengers: White wins all seven

All seven games of the Challengers section ended decisively. They all went in favor of the players with the white pieces.

Praggnanandhaa - Arjun: 1-0

Arjun Erigaisi (2801) won the last Classical game against R Praggnanandhaa (2741) at WR Masters last year after they won Gold at 45th Olympiad. Praggnanandhaa was shocked to see Arjun opting a line in the Open Catalan which traded queens as early as seventh move.

Position after 14...Bc6

Praggnanandhaa mentioned in the post-game interview that Black's position already started getting unpleasant after 14...Bc6. 15.Bxc6 bxc6 16.Nd3 Be7 17.Be3 was kind of important. He felt that b3 and c3-pawns were the main problems. Once he consolidates, then he will have a better pawn structure. Black was threatening Ne4, Bf6 to attack on c3.

Position after 25.Ke1

Black should have started with 23...a5 to get an extra tempo instead of 23...Rb7. Praggnanandhaa felt that 25...Kd6? was definitely an inaccuracy. He should have gone 25...Rba7 and then maybe later Kd6 because it allowed white to maneuver his knight to b5 via c1-a2-c3.

Position after 38...Rfa8?

Black's last mistake was 38...Rfa8? 39.Nb5 Ra6 40.Nd6+ and it's over. After the fall of f7-pawn, Black does not have much to go on.
