7th Gashimov Memorial R4-5: Rapport takes sole lead and now World no.6 in Rapid

Richard Rapport beat both Vugar Asadli and Rauf Mamedov 3-0 in Round 4 and 5 respectively to take sole lead 13.0/15 at the conclusion of the third day in 7th Vugar Gashimov Memorial 2021 Rapid. Vishy Anand lost the second game against Karjakin after the first game ended in a quick draw. Anand beat Mamedyarov in Armageddon after both Rapid games did not yield any result. Caruana-Karjakin Armageddon also ended in a draw, since the Russian had the Black pieces, he won the match. Karjakin is now at 10.0/15, a full point behind Caruana 11.0/15. Anand beats Mamedyarov in Armageddon

Richard Rapport is the only player to win both of his match 3-0 on the third day of 7th Vugar Gashimov Memorial 2021 Rapid. He is also now World no.6 in Rapid in live ratings.

Round 4: Rapport - Asadli: 3-0

Richard Rapport was completely winning the first Rapid game against Vugar Asadali.

White is completely winning after 26.Rd3 since the queen must leave the d1-h5 diagonal or give it up as White is threatening checkmate 27.Rxh7+ Kxh7 28.Rh3#. The game continued 26.Rxh7+ Kxh7 27.Rh3 Qh5 28.Qg4 Qxh3 29.Qxh3+ Kg8 30.Qe6+ and the game was drawn by perpetual check.

Round 5: Rapport - Mamedov: 3-0

Rapport won the second game against Mamedov with a beautiful sacrifice to win the match 3-0.

21.Bxe6 is a thematic sacrifice and White has executed it perfectly. There is no good defence for Black. The game continued 21...Rxh1 22.Rxh1 Nxc2 23.Bxc8 Nxd4 24.Bxb7 and White went on to win the game which allowed Rapport to move to the top of the points table.

After both Rapid games ended in draws, Anand beat Mamedyarov in Armageddon.

White needed to exchange the queens, 17.Qxa4 Bxa4 18.dxc5 Nxc3 19.Rb4 would have kept things in balance. Instead, the passive 17.Qc1 did not help White 17....Nb3 18.Qb2 cxd4 19.cxd4 Qa5+ 20.Kf1 b5 and Black got substantial advantage, eventually won the game and the match 1-2.

Players will get the following points per round:

Victory in the best of two Rapid games: 3 points

Loss in the best of two Rapid games: 0 point

Tie in Rapid games and victory Armageddon: 2 points

Tie in Rapid games and loss Armageddon: 1 point

Armageddon Rules

• If the score after two Rapid games is 1-1, then the players will move on to Armageddon.

• Armageddon time control is 5 minutes for White and 4 minutes for Black. Increment of 3 seconds each starts from move no.61. Black has draw odds.
