by Shahid Ahmed - 22/08/2024

GM Surya Sekhar Ganguly (PSPB), IM Neelash Saha (RSPB) and IM Aronyak Ghosh (RSPB) are the three leaders after the fifth round of 61st National Championship 2024. The top seed, Surya won a tough battle against GM Deep Sengupta (PSPB). The latter made a positional mistake which allowed his opponent to get an initiative and later do a beautiful combination. Neelash showed fantastic positional understanding to beat GM Sankalp Gupta (MAH). IM Aronyak Ghosh (RSPB) returned the in-form GM Venkatesh M R's (PSPB) exchange sacrifice and later seized his opportunity in the endgame. The reigning Tamil Nadu State Sub-Junior and Senior champion, 13-year-old CM Aakash G stunned India's latest GM P Shyaam Nikhil (RSPB). Round 6 starts tomorrow at 3:30 p.m. IST. Photos: Himank Ghosh

Position after 30.Rc6!

GM Sankalp Gupta (MAH, 2546) made an incorrect positional decision of opening up the c-file. White gained complete control of it and he asserted dominance 30.Rc6! If Black accepts the exchange sacrifice 30...Bxc6 White will very happy to recapture with the d5-pawn 31.dxc6 to open up his light-squared bishop's path. The game continued 30...h5 31.Rac1 Black had to take the rook, otherwise White will force by forming an Alekhine's Gun Bxc6 32.dxc6 Kh8 33.Bc4 Rh7 and White won the game in ten more moves.
