59th Biel Chess Festival 2026: Everything You Need to Know
The grueling, thrilling, and unique marathon of elite chess is back. The 59th Biel International Chess Festival is set to take over the Biel Congress Center (Kongresshaus) in Switzerland from July 11 to 24, 2026. For over half a century, Biel has been a sacred ground for chess players. What makes it truly special is its signature Triathlon format, a brutal test of versatility where players must fight across Classical, Rapid, and Blitz time formats to claim the ultimate crown. Women's World Championship Challenger R Vaishali will be seen in action at Biel.
A festival you can't miss
With a mix of legendary icons, reigning champions, and jaw-dropping prodigies, the 2026 edition is shaping up to be an absolute blockbuster. Here is everything you need to know about this summer's chess festival.
The Main Event: Masters Triathlon
The flagship Grandmasters Triathlon features a 6-player field balancing legendary experience with fearless youth.
Levon Aronian: Making his highly anticipated Biel debut, the former world no. 2 and three-time Olympiad gold medalist brings his legendary creativity to the triathlon format.

Liem Le: The Vietnamese superstar and three-time Biel Masters Triathlon champion (2022, 2023, 2024) returns to reclaim his throne after a last-minute withdrawal in 2025.

Yagiz Kaan Erdogmus: The 15-year-old Turkish sensation is taking the world by storm. Having recently become the youngest player in chess history to cross the 2700 Elo barrier (in May 2026), this prodigy will have all eyes on them.

Matthias Bluebaum: The steady German powerhouse, European Champion, and 2025 FIDE Grand Swiss runner-up arrives in peak form.

Aydin Suleymanli: The 21-year-old dynamic Azerbaijani talent and 2024 national champion makes his debut.

Jose Eduardo Martinez Alcantara: The Peruvian-born Mexican Grandmaster, known for his sharp tactical vision and fearless play, completes the elite lineup.

The Generations Challenge
The Challengers group also boasts a very interesting field - they will follow the exact same format as the Masters triathlon. The only Indian in the GMT this year is none other than the reigning FIDE Women's Candidates Winner and World Championship Challenger, R. Vaishali! This is how the complete lineup looks like:
Alexandra Kosteniuk: The "Chess Queen" is here in Biel at the Challengers group! Women’s World Champion (2008–2010), winner of the Women’s World Cup (2021), and triple Olympiad gold medallist with Russia (2010, 2012, 2014), Alexandra has the experience across all formats.

GM Vaishali Rameshbabu : 2-time FIDE Women's Grand Swiss Champion and FIDE Women's Candidates 2026 winner Vaishali comes to the Biel GMT for the first time - this will most likely be the last classical event before the Chess Olympiad. Vaishali played in the Challengers group back in Biel Chess Festival 2024 - she finished 3rd then! It will be interesting to see how Vaishali performs in this strong field across the various formats.

IM Carissa Yip: 4-time US Women's Champion and Tata Steel Chess India Women Blitz 2026 Champion, Carissa Yip now comes to Switzerland to dominate at the Biel Chess Festival!

GM Xiao Tong: Winner of the Biel Chess960 tournament in 2024, he became a grandmaster shortly afterwards — the fifth youngest in Chinese history! Xiao Tong plays the Generations Challenge this time.

The Scoring System
Survival in the Triathlon requires mastering every speed. The points are weighted heavily to reward classical chess fightbacks:
Classical: Win = 4 points | Draw = 1½ points | Loss = 0 points
Rapid: Win = 2 points | Draw = 1 point | Loss = 0 points
Blitz: Win = 1 point | Draw = ½ point | Loss = 0 points
