57th Biel GMT: Haik Martirosyan triumphs in Rapid, Praggnanandhaa second

Haik Martirosyan (ARM) scored an unbeaten 7/10 to win the Rapid event of 57th Biel International Chess Festival 2024 GMT. R Praggnanandhaa, Vincent Keymer (GER) and Liem Quang Le (VIE) scored 5/10 each. They were placed second to fourth according to tie-breaks (Chess960 standings). Praggnanandhaa had a tough day as he scored his sole win over Keymer, before finishing the event with a loss against Sam Shankland (USA). GM Alexander Donchenko (GER) won the Challengers event scoring 7/10. GM R Vaishali scored 5/10 to finish at fourth place. She defeated Ihor Samunenkhov (UKR) and Marc` Andria Maurizzi (FRA). Donchenko wins the Challengers Rapid

GM Alexander Donchenko (GER) won his second consecutive event in the Challengers section. The GMT still has Classical and Blitz events left. The Classical segment has two stages.

R Praggnanandhaa (2705) scored his sole win of the day against Vincent Keymer (GER, 2645). The Germany no.1 made a correct thematic exchange sacrifice in the Italian opening. However, he could not make the most out of his opportunity.
