23rd Dubai Open 2023 R3-4: Aravindh Chitambaram emerges sole leader 4/4

by Shahid Ahmed - 31/05/2023

Aravindh Chithambaram defeated previous round leader, Vahap Sanal (TUR) to gain sole lead at 23rd Dubai Open 2023. Yangyi Yu (CHN) and M Amin Tabatabaei (IRI) are the only two players trailing by a half point at 3.5/4. Aravindh will face the top seed Yangyi in the fifth round. Vahap made the incorrect exchange which opened up the f-file and worsened his position further. Aditya Mittal scored a nice win over Ilia Smirin (ISR). The latter made a couple of inaccuracies in the rook endgame which Aditya capitalized on. Aditya, Arjun Erigaisi, B Adhiban and Harsha Bharathakoti are at 3/4 each. Round 4 starts today at 5 p.m. local time, 6:30 p.m. IST. Photos: Aditya Sur Roy

IM Sambit Panda and IM Anuj Shrivatri held 44th Chess Olympiad Gold medalist GM Jakhongir Vakhidov (UZB) and GM Rodrigo to a draw each respectively.

Aravindh - Theodorou, Round 3

Position after 53.Re2

It was not easy to figure out that 53...Bg1 is the correct way for Black to stay in the game. 53...Re6 54.Be5 Rc6 55.Rd2+ Ke6 56.Kb4 and White went on to win the game.

Vahap - Aravindh, Round 4

Position after 30...Ne5

Sometimes the correct exchange of pieces can turn things in your favor and incorrect ones worsen things further. The latter happened with the Turkey no.2 GM Vahap Sanal (2600). Th best response for White after 30...Ne5 was 31.Re3 to continue the fight. 31.Bxe5 opened up the f-file which only helped Black and allowed the queen to come through the kingside via e7-h4. 31...fxe5 32.Rf2 Be7 33.Qd3 Qg4 34.Ref1 h6 35.Qe3 Bg6 and it was just a matter of time before things fell apart for White.

Aditya Mittal - Smirin

Position after 43.Rd6+

Where should the king move? Back or towards the h5-pawn? 43...Ke7 would have been correct. 43...Kg5?? invited 44.Kd3. The game continued 44.c6 Re8 Black did not use his second chance well. 44...Re4 was the last opportunity to salvage a half point. 45.Kd3 h4 46.Kd4 and White went on to win the game.

GM Aditya Mittal is now at an unbeaten 3/4
