1st Maharashtra GM Open 2022 R5-6: Srihari L R shines

by Shahid Ahmed - 04/06/2022

Srihari L R is the sole IM among seven players who is in the lead 5/6 at 1st Maharashtra GM Open 2022. He started the day with a victory over GM Aleksej Aleksandrov. In the sixth round, he was substantially better against GM Deep Sengupta in the endgame. However, it was not easy to convert, the game ended in a draw. GM Deep Sengupta and GM Arjun Kalyan are the remaining two Indians in the lead. IM Bhakti Kulkarni is the highest scorer among female participants so far 4.5/6, followed by WGM Divya Deshmukh 4/6 and WGM Priyanka Nutakki 3.5/6. Round 5: Aleksandrov - Srihari L R: 1-0

IM Srihari L R (2404) made the most out of his opponent GM Aleksej Aleksandrov's (2492) inaccurate play in the middlegame.

Position after 16.Qb1

A series of mistakes started with 14.dxe5 Qxe5 15.f4 Qc7 16.Qb1 Nb3 17.f5 Qb6. Precise play by Srihari earned him a full point and put him among the leaders.

Venkatesh - Ameya: 0-1

IM Ameya Audi (2389) got a pleasant position out of the Scotch opening against GM Venkatesh M R (2490).

Position after 31.Bc3

While the computer might suggest 31...Qg6 to be the best continuation for Black, Ameya opted for the humane 31...Nxc3 which seems to be much better. However, after 32.bxc3 he made an error of playing Rc4. 32...Rdg4 and things would have been fine. Find out what did both players miss after 32...Rc4, the sole winning opportunity for White.
