Timur Turlov has been elected as the new President of the International Chess Federation. Five-time World Champion Viswanathan Anand will serve as the new Deputy President. The elections were held on September 26 at the FIDE General Assembly in Samarkand, Uzbekistan, alongside the 46th Chess Olympiad.

Turlov, the President of the Kazakhstan Chess Federation, defeated Wadim Rosenstein in the second round of voting, securing 110 votes against Rosenstein’s 85. Jan Henric Buettner was eliminated in the first round.
The 38-year-old Turlov becomes the eighth FIDE President and succeeds Arkady Dvorkovich, who served from 2018 to 2026. He had been serving as President of the Kazakhstan Chess Federation since 2023 and has been closely involved in supporting chess events and development in the country.
Turlov is also the CEO of Freedom Holding Corp., a financial services company listed on NASDAQ. During his tenure in Kazakhstan, Freedom Holding has supported several major chess events and initiatives. He has also been involved in the International School Chess Federation, which focuses on expanding chess in education.
Anand was part of Turlov's presidential ticket and returns to the position of FIDE Deputy President. He had previously served as Deputy President alongside Dvorkovich and also served as FIDE Interim President earlier this year.
