The result

GM Matthias Bluebaum won the first Freestyle Friday of the new season on October 2 with 9 points, half a point clear of the field. Behind him, GM Oleksandr Bortnyk took second, India's GM Pranav Venkatesh third and GM S.L. Narayanan fourth, all three on 8.5/11. Pranav beat IM Quoc Hy Nguyen in round 9 and drew Bluebaum in round 10.

Pranav is the only Indian who has qualified to the Freestyle World Championship!

Can S.L. Narayanan be the second Indian to make it to Weissenhaus?

Why it matters

Freestyle Friday is the weekly online tournament on Chess.com that feeds the 2027 FIDE Freestyle Chess World Championship, to be played at Weissenhaus, Germany (Women: February 5-7, Open: February 12-14, 2027). Each field has eight places. Five in each field are already filled, so three remain in the Open and three in the Women's.

Who has qualified: Open

Magnus Carlsen, Fabiano Caruana, Nodirbek Abdusattorov, Vincent Keymer and Pranav Venkatesh. Pranav earned his place by finishing first in Part 1 of the Freestyle Friday Championship with 60 points, so his result on October 2 does not change his qualification.

Who has qualified: Women

Bibisara Assaubayeva, Harika Dronavalli, Alua Nurman, Dinara Wagner and Anna Muzychuk. Assaubayeva qualified through the 2026 Freestyle Chess exhibition match in Weissenhaus; Harika, Nurman and Wagner through the grenke Freestyle Chess Open 2026 in Karlsruhe; Muzychuk by finishing first in the Women's standings of Freestyle Friday Part 1 with 88 points. India's Harika is already in the field.

How the remaining places will be decided

The same three routes apply in both fields, with separate Open and Women's leaderboards and separate qualifiers. Each route awards one place.

1. Freestyle Friday Championship: weekly events continue every Friday until December 4, and points from Part 1 carry over. The top seven eligible players in each field's combined standings go into a knockout (quarterfinals December 11, semifinals and final December 18). The winner qualifies.

2. Online Qualifier I (November 29 to December 3): an open Swiss on November 29, then a second Swiss for titled players and the top eight from the first, then a 16-player knockout on December 2 and 3. The winner qualifies.

3. Online Qualifier II (January 3 to 7, 2027): same format. The winner completes the line-up.

Only players who have not yet qualified can enter the online qualifiers. Nine Fridays remain in the Freestyle Friday Championship (October 9 to December 4), so Narayanan and the other Indian players still have time to climb the standings.
