Platon Galperin wins 10th Pontevedra Masters, Leon Luke Mendonca third
IM Platon Galperin (UKR) scored an unbeaten 7.5/9 to win 10th Pontevedra Masters 2022. He finished a half point ahead of the competition. GM Karen Grigoryan (ARM) and GM Leon Luke Mendonca scored 7/9 each. Leon was placed third according to tie-breaks. The only other Indian to finish in top 10 is - IM P Shyam Nikhil. He scored 6/9. Both Platon and Leon remained undefeated. Karen lost against both of them. Total Prize fund of the tournament was €12000. Top three prizes were €2000, €1200 and €800 along with a trophy each. 21...Qg7 turned out to be a positional mistake for Black as 22.Bxe5 Rxe5 23.f4 Re7 24.g4 Nd4 25.g5. Black lost control of the f6-square and the position too. Soon things started falling apart for Black and White won the game eventually.
A total of 69 players including 8 GMs and 8 IMs took part from 16 countries across the world from 24th to 30th July 2022. The event was organized by Escola Xadrez de Pontevedra at Pontevedra, Spain from 24th and 30th July 2022. The time control for the tournament was 90 minutes + 30 seconds per move.
