Five Indians in World Top 20 - FIDE Rating list March 2024

FIDE publishes its rating list at the beginning of each month. March 2024 FIDE Rating list retains the same number of Indians in the World Top 20 - five. Vishy Anand's unbeaten 2/3 at Bundesliga moved him up to World no.10 from 12. Arjun Erigaisi's fantastic performance at Bundesliga West and Israel Nations League earned him 10 Elo rating points. He moved four places from World no.18 to 14. Arjun is followed closely by D Gukesh, R Praggnanandhaa and Vidit Gujrathi from 15th to 17th place. All of them have the same rating 2747. Among the Women, GM Koneru Humpy dropped a couple of places as she lost 8.1 Elo rating points. She is now at World no.5 among Women. IM Divya Deshmukh maintained her place at World no.38. Arjun Erigaisi moves up to World no.14 and India no.2

GM Arjun Erigaisi gained 10 Elo rating points combining two events - Bundesliga West and Israel Nations League. He is the World no.14 in March FIDE Rating list 2024. He also became India no.1 in live ratings after the publication of March FRL. It is not every day we get to see four Indians occupying four consecutive places in World Top 20 and three of them having the exact same published rating 2747. It will be interesting to see who breaks into World Top 10 after Vishy Anand, Pentala Harikrishna and D Gukesh, in the coming days.

Women: Three in Top 15, Five in Top 40

Three Indian women are in top 15, four in top 40 and five in top 50. GM Koneru Humpy lost 8.1 Elo rating points at Graz Open 2024. She dropped from World no.3 to World no.5 among women. GM Harika Dronavalli, GM R Vaishali and IM Divya Deshmukh maintained their position at no.11, 14 and 38. Although, Divya lost 3.2 Elo rating points, she is still at World no.38 among Women.

Countries

India is currently at no.2 in terms of average rating of top ten players, 9 Elo rating points behind the USA. The gap got reduced from 11 to 9 from February to March 2024 FIDE Rating list.
